Week 2 Threaded Discussion: Q2: After reading “Web-Based Electronic Health Record Systems” case study(page 187), answer the following question: What benefits and risks are offered by web-based health records management systems like Google health?
1. they can be accessed by many physicians at more than one location 2. such a system eliminates problems caused by duplicate records at different physician offices, avoids having to fill out a new patient history with each new physician visited by the patient. 3. reduces errors made by incorrectly deciphering handwritten notes and prescriptions 4. electronic records can make for a better and healthier world.
THE RISKS:
1. the cost of moving to electronic systems is prohibitive. 2. privacy and security concerns are raised both by corporate access to private records . 3. unauthorized users might also be able to access records stored on a network that billions of users around the world use . 4. third-party medical record services are not covered by the Health Insurance Protability And Accountability Act (HIPAA)
FROM INFORMATION SYSTEMS (Ralph Stair,George Reynolds)
As I read from the book ,Electronic health record(HER) systems store patient records in a central database that can be accessed by many physicians at more than one location.
Benefits:
1- One of the many benefits of storing your medical records electronically is that your files will be easier to read. No longer will anyone have to decipher hand written notes, so errors can be avoided. 2- Avoids having to fill out new patient history with each new physic visited by the patient. 3- Safety and security of data ( access to the patient’s information is control by the patient himself and providers). 4- The records can be stored without taking up physical space. 5- Reduce medical errors. 6- Improve quality of care. 7- lower administrative costs.
Risks:
1- Unauthorized users might be able to access to patient information. 2- Patient may access to information about conditions that they may not understand which may frighten them. 3- There is not one electronic medical records system.
1-ability to generate a complete record of a clinical patient encounter .
2- supporting other care-related activities directly or indirectly via interface - including evidence-based decision support, quality management, and outcomes reporting.
3- accessed by many physicians at more than one location .
4- it is acollaborative process between patients and doctors
RISKS :
1- cost of moving to electronic systems is prohibitive .
2- medical record services are not covered by health insurance portability and accountability act (HIPAA).
3- records would no longer be protected by the standards imposed by HIPAA in its current form .
4- patients should weigh the costs in terms of privacy and security against the benefits of convenience and data reliability .

As I read from the book about EHR systems I found that it has some benefits such as:
1. elimination of problems caused by the duplication of records at different physician offices.
2. avoids filling out a new patient history with each new physician visited by the patient.
3. reduces errors made by incorrectly deciphering handwritten notes and prescriptions.
On the other hand, there are some risks that people should be aware of such as:
1. access to private records by some corporates and outsiders like hackers. Also unauthorized users might also be able to access records stored on networks that most of the people around the world use.
2. another problem is that the third-party medical record services are not covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
3. those records would no longer be protected by the standards imposed by HIPAA in its current form.

The risks: 1. the high cost. 2. unauthorized users. 3. the third-party medical record services are not covered by the health insurance . 4.hackers 5. more cost for more security.
BENIFITS: 1-Reduction of cost 2-Improve quality of care 3-Promote evidence-based medicine 4-Record keeping and mobility RISKS: 1-Costs 2-Time Often, doctors do not want to spend the time to learn a new system. Some doctors believe that adopting a system with EHRs could reduce clinical productivity 3- Governance, privacy and legal issues 4-Privacy Concerns 5-Legal issues 6-Liability 7- Legal Interoperability
1)Avoids having to fill out a new patient history with each new physician visited by the patient 2)Reduces errors made by incorrectly deciphering handwritten notes and prescriptions . 3)Easy to take crisis action when you move a patient in serious condition and that offers Wayne appropriate treatment for his condition.
Risks:
1) Privacy and security concerns are raised both by corporate access to private records and outsider access by hackers 2)the third-party medical record services are not covered by the health insurance . . 3)It doen't have a good privacy and security system because it protected by only one password 4)The cost of moving o electronic systems is prohibitive As I read from the book
As I understood after reading "Fundamental of information system" book:
E-health is a term used to describe heath care that provides through information technology -ex: the internet-.
How does E-health enrich the medical services?
1- Provides greater speed and efficiency: quick feedback, related hyperlinks and interactive programs could help a person to improve his/her health by him/her self immediately.
2- saving time and energy : no need to fill out a bunch of papers about: illness history, medical reports, and medicine which been taken with every appointment. Also, the medical information would be available to all professionals and doctors -this is important specially in emergency cases-.
3- less "dangerous" misunderstandings: no more mistakes and errors which been caused because of incorrectly deciphering handwritten notes and prescriptions.
4- take no material place: billions of data could be stored in a small part of a memory device. On the other hand, reports and patients' records take a huge space around.
what about the risks? Almost every electronic deal or file has the same issues:
1- Privacy and Security concerns: all the information could be cracked by crackers. There is no "safe corner" in the electronic world.
2- Data Integrity: the data could be deleted or erased at any time because of viruses, bugs or even a technical failure
3- Confidentiality: still there is no HIPAA for electronic medical records.
• Give your employees the tools to provide better quality care through clinical decision support and complete documentation. • Deploy an interoperable, adaptable solution that enables citizens to review and manage their own healthcare information easily through a security-enhanced Web portal. •
Internet-based PHRs allow health information to be accessed and edited via a Web browser . They have the advantage of being accessible from any location with an Internet connection with a suitable Web browser. By using the Internet, the PHR is enabled to be interactive, and to evolve with medical literature and the medical history of the patient and his or her family. While some Internet based serve primarily as a ubiquitously accessible repository, others attempt to become the primary personal medical resource with up to date medical information. The data in an Internet-based PHR is stored on a remote server, ie not on the users local machine. This implies that the data is generally more available and more likely to have robust backup procedures protecting the data. Because more health data is stored it make it a more attractive target for unauthorized access

ReplyDelete1. elimination of problems caused by the duplication of records at different physician offices.
2. avoids filling out a new patient history with each new physician visited by the patient.
3. reduces errors made by incorrectly deciphering handwritten notes and prescriptions.

As I read from the book
As I understood after reading "Fundamental of information system" book:
ReplyDeleteE-health is a term used to describe heath care that provides through information technology -ex: the internet-.
3- Confidentiality: still there is no HIPAA for electronic medical records.
benefits
ReplyDelete • Give your employees the tools to provide better quality care through clinical decision support and complete documentation.
Because more health data is stored it make it a more attractive target for unauthorized access
risks
1. the high cost.
2. hackers
